RV Home Tour – a look inside and out

After a year of traveling as a full-time RV family, we realized we haven’t ever shared an RV home tour. When we were shopping for RV’s, it is tough to imagine living in an RV. We had so many questions: where does everything go? Is this RV big enough? Do we have enough storage space? How do you organize? Whether you are planning on traveling in an RV or just curious to see what it is like living in an RV, we invite you to check out our tiny home on wheels.

RV Home Sweet Home – Inside Look

Our tiny home is a 2021 Grand Design Solitude 3740BH-R. This unit is an early model before they made running changes in the mid-model year. Our rig is 2021 without the black faucet and lighter cabinet changes but does have the linoleum vinyl on the living room slide.

We shopped long and hard for the perfect rig for our family. The bunkhouse version is the perfect space for our twins to be able to play, rest and read. Having the second 1/2 bath helps streamline nighttime routines.

We have done a little RV renovation. Almost everything we did can be found in our Amazon store, including the backsplashes, master bath sink, and faucet install. Any of the florals or utensil canisters are Walmart.com Pioneer Woman and also listed on our Amazon storefront.

Reno Paint details:

  • Walls – Behr Marquee One-Coat Hide in color Ocean Mist
  • Island – Behr Marquee One-Coat Hide in color Celebration
  • Trim – Behr Marquee One-Coat Hide in color Ultra White (primed two coats first)

RV Home Sweet Home – Outside Look

This is our RV Home Tour 2.0 of the outside of our Grand Design Solitude 3740BH-R to give ideas on organizing and setting up camp.

Changes we made on the outside:

  • We added the Lippert FlexAir Kingpin hitch to better ride quality and prevent as much chucking on travel days.
  • To stabilize our rig from tiny humans jumping around three ways: the tripod at the kingpin, X-chocks on the trailer tires, and rear stabilizing jacks under the back bumper.
  • Our outdoor kitchen is mainly as John’s garage and workshop. However, I do like having the outdoor sink for the girls to wash messy hands.
  • We switched out the chiller that came with the rig for an actual fridge. Unfortunately, this fridge does not connect to the inverter, so it doesn’t stay cold on travel days; therefore, we only keep drinks in the refrigerator.
  • We did not love the Suburban Griddle with the RV as grease splattered the fridge and outdoor kitchen. We also had a hard time on windy days getting it to cook. Since we rarely used the griddle for camp breakfast, we took it out for storage. Instead, we bought a tabletop-sized grill and preferred the taste.
  • We added Hollywoodracks made explicitly for electric bikes and RV hitches in the back of our rig.
  • On the business side of the tiny house, you find the connection command center. Here you can plug in the 50amp electrical cord, connect the black and grey tank dump hoses, freshwater connections, and the electric jack controller.

Best Practices for the Outside

  • We finally purchased double outdoor rugs to double our space for the girls to play and keep the dirt down around our campsite.
  • For outdoor tables: like the covers with ties or elastic for our picnic tables to keep them from blowing away. I like the table clothes which come with bench covers too.
  • We lock up our Rad Power Bike in the front of our fifth wheel. We also secure our kingpin with a lock to ensure no one takes off with our house on wheels.
  • The access to the ½ bath is excellent for guests or little kids not tracking in the dirt to the main rig.
  • On nights we do not “Netflix and Chill,” John and I enjoy sitting by the Outland Propane fire pit. Unfortunately, we have found many campsites do not allow wood campfires in dry conditions.
  • On the business side of the tiny house, you find the connection command center. Here you can plug in the 50amp electrical cord, connect the black and grey tank dump hoses, freshwater connections, and the electric jack controller.

Do you have to renovate an RV?

One important note we want to make with our readers: Please do not think you have to renovate an RV. We were hesitant to make any changes, while others like to rip everything out and immediately remodel. We believe you need to live in an RV for a while and see what best works for your family. Whatever you do, remember this is your tiny home on wheels; therefore, make it your own with friendly touches of home. Maybe it’s painting, or may it is adding a few throw pillows. Just remember, the adventure of living in an RV can bring you many BRIGHT DAIS AHEAD!

We want to hear from you!
